Originally conceived as a record of stillness, this series has evolved into Bathymetric Studies, a mapping of depth and transformation through material process.

A solid field of acrylic paint is swept onto the canvas with a silicone wedge, establishing the submerged topography. The wedge leaves marks behind, and these marks serve as the given environment. Adopting the visual language of oceanography, the subsequent line work is applied with a liner brush, functioning as a sounding line. These lines are charted in direct relation to the wedge’s structural moves and residual marks, measuring and reorganizing the base terrain: sometimes following the ridges, sometimes overriding, or pushing against them.

The series charts how environments shape us, and how individual and collective actions reshape the environment.

Large-scale deep blue painting on canvas by Ilayda Mercankaya Visual Artist, with organic white lines that resemble an underwater flowing river.

The work perceives life as a continuous stream of change. The ultramarine background suggests a volatile space, establishing a turbulent environment. Against this base, the dense white linework cuts through the center like a concentrated current. As the lines navigate the underlying ridges, they cluster tightly together; sometimes flowing with the terrain, and sometimes carving an entirely new path over it. The visual elements coexist without dominating one another; existing tensions no longer destabilize, but rather shape the composition.

The visual field allows for variation without collapsing into fragmentation. Integration does not eliminate pressure; it absorbs and transforms it.

Blue colored meditative painting on canvas featuring white and blue organic line art resembling underwater caves, created by Ilayda Mercankaya.

Strictly Blue visualizes a state of stabilization. The fine linework anchors directly in the center in response to the sweeping background, charting the marks to build a concentrated, stable mass.

The piece demonstrates that finding balance is about taking inherited conditions and constructing a completely new reality directly on top of them. The dense accumulation of lines maps the deliberate effort it takes to build a stable foundation and hold it there.

Bright neon pink painting on canvas with white and red organic line art by Ilayda Mercankaya Visual Artist.

This high-intensity environment enforces a shared physical experience. Prolonged observation saturates the retina, inducing a temporary negative afterimage washed in phantom green; a lingering ghost of the intensity present during its creation. This biological transience is mirrored in the physical materials. The fugitive neon base is designed to gradually fade over time, mimicking the retinal afterimage. As the color recedes, the structural Iron Oxide lines emerge with stark contrast, stripping away temporary visual noise to expose a permanent, stabilized foundation.
