Études is a series of standalone drawings that examine the physical act of drawing through the line systems of the Topographies series. Working with Indian ink, steel nibs, water washes, and charcoal on handmade cotton paper, each piece is finished in one sitting. Completing a sheet in a single session keeps the physical conditions (ie. posture, mood, hand control, and focus) continuous rather than fragmented across multiple days.
The line functions as an index: a physical trace shaped by posture, fatigue, and the resistance of the paper as much as by the tool. Visually, most of the drawings read as topographic fragments. Occasionally, a formation surfaces: the lines tighten into a fold or circular motif, and the topographic field yields an identifiable structure.
A formation (in the middle), and topographies belonging to it (left, right), all drawn with ink and dip pen with a hard nib.
